Music, Voice, and Memories
The Golden Cups were formed in Yokohama in the mid-1960s and became one of the most unique Group Sounds bands in Japan. Their music was strongly influenced by the atmosphere of Honmoku, Yokohama, where American military culture, R&B, blues, and rock music were part of daily life.
Unlike many other Group Sounds bands of that time, The Golden Cups had a strong live-band feeling. Their music carried a cool, international style that came from Yokohama and the American base culture.
Their well-known songs include “Itoshino Jezebel,” “Nagai Kami no Shojo,” “Aisuru Kimi ni,” “Gin-iro no Glass,” and “Cool na Koi.”
My brother, known as Mamoru Manu, was the drummer and also a vocalist of The Golden Cups. He is especially remembered for his part in “Nagai Kami no Shojo”, which became one of the band’s most loved songs.
His voice had a soft and clear quality. It was not only powerful, but also gentle and memorable. His English pronunciation was also very natural, and when he sang Western songs, he did not simply copy the words. He seemed to understand the feeling and atmosphere of the music.
Songs such as “White Room” and “Unchained Melody” remain as examples of his beautiful voice. When he sang in English, I feel that his unique background in Yokohama and Honmoku naturally appeared in his style.
After leaving The Golden Cups, he continued his music career under different names, including Mamoru Saegusa and Yuki Go. During his solo years, he released songs such as “Ame no Machi,” “Futari no Hodou,” “Kita-guni no Wakare,” and “Mou Ichido Jinsei wo.”
Later, he also participated in the Tigers Memorial Band and continued to stay connected to music. For our family, it is meaningful to remember not only the glamorous years, but also the way music remained part of his life.
音楽、歌声、そして思い出
ザ・ゴールデン・カップスは、1960年代半ばに横浜で結成され、日本のグループ・サウンズの中でも とても個性的な存在でした。横浜・本牧の空気、アメリカ軍キャンプ文化、R&B、ブルース、 ロックの影響を強く受けたバンドでした。
当時の多くのグループ・サウンズとは少し違い、ザ・ゴールデン・カップスには本格的なライブバンド としての雰囲気がありました。横浜らしい、少し外国的でクールな音楽性が魅力でした。
代表曲には、「いとしのジザベル」「長い髪の少女」「愛する君に」 「銀色のグラス」、そして「クールな恋」などがあります。
兄はマモル・マヌーとして、ザ・ゴールデン・カップスのドラマーであり、 ボーカリストとしても活動していました。特に「長い髪の少女」での歌声は、 今でも多くのファンの方々の記憶に残っていると思います。
兄の歌声には、ソフトで透き通った響きがありました。力強く前に出るというより、 自然に心に残るような声だったと思います。また、英語の発音もとても良く、 洋楽を歌う時にも、ただ言葉をなぞるのではなく、曲の空気を自然に表現していたように感じます。
「White Room」 や 「Unchained Melody」 などの洋楽にも、 兄らしい美しい歌声が残されています。英語の歌を歌う時の雰囲気には、 横浜・本牧で育った兄ならではの感覚が表れていたように思います。
ゴールデン・カップスを離れた後も、兄は三枝マモルやゆうき剛 などの名義でソロ活動を続けました。ソロ時代には、「雨の街」「ふたりの舗道」 「北国の別れ」、そして「もう一度人生を」などの曲を残しています。
その後、兄はタイガース・メモリアル・バンドにも参加しました。 華やかな時代の活動だけでなく、後年にも音楽とつながり続けていたことは、 家族としても大切に残しておきたい記憶です。
